Breast Lift Pre-op Instructions

May 19, 2015

Some patients may not take cosmetic surgical procedures seriously simply because they are elective treatments that are designed to improve their appearance. Of course, certain cosmetic surgeries are more involved than others. Dermal filler injections are not as invasive as a breast lift procedure. The latter surgery requires more careful attention to pre-op instructions to reduce the risk of complications. The breast lift procedure is designed to lift drooping breasts back into a higher, more youthful position. It can be done alone or with a breast augmentation procedure, which increase the size of the bust. Read on to learn some general pre-operative breast lift instructions. For more detailed instructions, schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Tobacco and Alcohol

Patients who smoke or have more than just the occasional alcoholic drink are at greater risk for complications both during and after a breast lift procedure. Tobacco and alcohol put the body at risk for excessive bleeding both during and after the procedure. This may lead to poor wound healing and excessive scarring. Patients should quit tobacco and alcohol use starting three weeks prior to the procedure. It is best if they stop altogether, but they should wait a minimum of four to six weeks after surgery to resume.

Preparing for Coming Home after Surgery

  1. Patients must have somebody accompany them on the day of surgery. Patients will not be allowed to drive home or take a bus or taxi following the procedure. Somebody should also stay with the patient for the first 24 to 48 hours after. It is advisable to line this up about a week prior to surgery.
  2. Patients may also be given pain and antibiotic prescriptions to begin taking after the procedure. Filling them a few days before surgery is an excellent idea, as patients will not be in any condition to do so immediately after surgery.
  3. Lay out beforehand the clothes that will be worn on the day of surgery. Loose fitting, elastic waistband pants and a soft, button-down top will keep patients comfortable immediately after surgery.
  4. Patients should take a shower and wash their hair the night before surgery. Using antibiotic soap, thoroughly wash the breasts, including the underside. Do not use any antiperspirant or deodorant on the armpits or any body lotion on the arms or torso.
  5. Remove all jewelry, including any piercings, the morning before surgery. Patients should not wear their contact lenses for surgery. They should also avoid using any lotion or perfume before coming in for the procedure.

The truth is that cosmetic surgery is every bit as serious a procedure as a medically necessary surgical procedure. Providing patients with pre-op instructions will help them be better prepared for the big day. Before surgery, patients should also understand their post-operative instructions and be sure they have everything they will need during the healing period.
