Neck Lift Benefits

August 27, 2013

As people age, the supportive tissue under the neck may begin to sag or become loose. This leads to excess skin around the neck, giving the “turkey wattle” effect. It can also make the chin look less defined, and sometimes lead to a double chin. Any of these can cause a person to look old, tired, or worn. A neck lift cosmetic surgical procedure can treat these aging issues by removing excess skin around the neck, restoring a youthful, fresh appearance to the face.

Neck Lift Procedure

In the neck lift procedure, two small incisions are made on either side of the head. One is placed in the crease behind the ear, and the other is placed below the chin. The neck skin is lifted away, tightened up, and sutured back into place. The procedure generally takes no more than an hour, and oftentimes less.

Benefits of a neck lift procedure

Minimal scarring: The incisions are very small and likely to not be noticeable, even when the hair is pulled back. The small size of the incisions also dramatically reduces healing time following the surgery.

Rejuvenated appearance: Tightening up the neck and giving the chin more definition will make the patient appear younger and more refreshed. Additionally, it will likely not be readily apparent that the patient has undergone cosmetic surgery. Friends and family may notice that something has changed to make the patient look more youthful, but won’t know that the patient underwent surgery.

Appearance of a longer neck: Another benefit to neck surgery is that it can make the neck appear longer. The long, elegant swan neck is a very desirable feature, particularly for women. A neck lift procedure may help patients achieve that look by removing excess, loose skin along the neckline.

Long-term benefits: Although the neck will inevitably sag again due to aging, it will take a number of years for that to happen. Patients can undergo a second procedure if the neck begins to sag again at that point.

Minimal recovery time: Unlike with a full facelift, a neck lift is a very simple, short procedure. Patients should be able to resume normal activities, including returning to work, within just a few days after the procedure.

Minimal side effects: Although there may be some bruising and swelling, it will be very minor compared to other, more involved cosmetic procedures. There may be some discomfort, such as numbness around the incision sites, but this should start to go away within a few weeks of surgery.

Less risk of complications: Most patients do not experience any complications, such as excessive bleeding, infection, or allergic reaction to anesthesia, after neck lift surgery.
