Brow Lift and Age

December 18, 2014

While most people think that brow lift surgery is reserved for patients in their 40s, 50s, and older, younger patients in their 20s and 30s also choose to undergo the procedure. However, each age group has distinct goals for brow lift surgery. Older patients tend to undergo brow lift surgery to reduce the appearance of frown lines, forehead creases, and drooping brows. Younger patients may elect to undergo brow lift surgery to adjust the level of the hairline and improve overall facial proportion. In this blog post, the surgeons at Crawford Plastic Surgery discuss the brow lift techniques that are commonly performed on patients of different age groups. Contact our practice today to find out if you are a good candidate for treatment.

Patients in Their 20s and 30s

Younger patients have very different goals for brow lift surgery than older patients. At Crawford Plastic Surgery, we see younger brow lift patients who:

  • Have a low hairline, resulting in a short forehead
  • Have naturally low brows
  • Have a receding hairline
  • Have a long forehead

During a pre-operative consultation, our surgeons will examine your facial anatomy, including the level of your eyebrows, hairline, severity of frown lines, the extent of the horizontal creases above the brows, and condition of the corrugator muscles. We will determine if brow lift surgery will effectively meet your cosmetic goals.

Patients in Their 40s, 50s, and Older

Most commonly, patients coming to us for brow lift surgery are in their 40s and older. These patients have developed vertical lines between the brows, also known as frown lines and glabellar lines. In addition, deep horizontal creases have developed along the forehead. Finally, the eyebrows have begun to droop, contributing to an older and more tired appearance.

Brow lift surgery can be performed to address all of these cosmetic concerns. Depending on the extent of skin and muscle laxity, we may perform one of the following techniques:

  • Coronal brow lift: The coronal brow lift involves an incision that is made within the hairline. Through this incision, the surgeon can access the underlying muscles and remove excess skin. Once the necessary adjustments are made, the hair-bearing portion of skin is removed.
  • Hairline brow lift: The hairline brow lift involves an incision that is made along the hairline. This approach also allows the surgeon to suture the forehead muscles and eliminate excess skin. In this approach, the non-hair-bearing portion of skin is removed.

After brow lift surgery, patients can enjoy a more refreshed, youthful appearance. The brows will be elevated, and the skin on the forehead and between the eyebrows will be smooth. These changes can last for 10 years or more if patients maintain a healthy lifestyle.
